India Poker Legend, August 2011 – Tourney Report

The highly awaited India Poker Legend (IPL) tournament took place from the 18^th-21^st August 2011 at Casino Royale, Goa. The IPL weekend action included a high stakes INR 100k buy-in NLHE freezeout event and the INR 12K bounty + re-entry tournament. The response to the IPL main event was extremely encouraging with 43 participants making it one of the largest prize pools in Indian tourney history and establishing the organizers (The Shark) as the premier high stakes tourney organizers in India.

Following action was witnessed at the India Poker Legend four-day poker tournament:

Thursday August 18^th: INR 5K No Limit Hold’em Re-buy

The first event of the India Poker Legend weekend was the 5K re-buy held on Thursday. The event saw a decent response with a field of 54 players starting including tournament regulars such as Dhaval Mudgal, Lawrence Sanjay, Rakesh Agarwal, Farukh Shaikh, Abhishek Goindi, amongst many first timers from all over India. The tournament structure allowed re-buys upto the first hour and one add-on at the end of this, ensuring fast & furious poker action including 29 re-buys and 27 add-ons. The first 7 places were paid and the final 9 were decided after 5hrs 20 minutes and another 3hours 20 minutes of final table play saw Jasven Saigal as the eventual winner, a regular tourney specialist in the Goa Poker Tournament Circuit and the organizer of the Aces Unlimited events at Casino Pride.

Friday August 19th: INR 10K No Limit Hold’em Freeze-out

Day 2 of the tournament weekend saw a smaller field due to players resting before the 100k main event to be held the following day and only 37 players attended the 10k freeze-out. The event saw many regular tournament pros such as Rakesh Agarwal, Jasven Saigal, Dhaval Mudgal and Hussain Lakda, amongst others. The tournament lasted a total of 7 hours 10 minutes with Lawrence Sanjay winning the event after battling the final table for almost 3 hours, with Dhaval Mudgal finishing 2^nd (two money finishes for him on the first two days of the IPL weekend).

Saturday August 20^th: INR 100K No Limit Hold’em Freezeout

The eagerly awaited main event of the India Poker Legend was held on the third day featuring a high stakes 100k freeze-out tournament. The poker room had a real buzz before the start of the event, with one of the hardest tourney fields in India preparing to take down the title. The event got underway with 38 players and with 5 late registrations, the total prize-pool was one of the largest in Indian poker tournament history. The final table saw an intense heads-up battle between Arjun Pasricha and Mohit Kumar (both of whom had entered the final table with the top 2 chip counts). After 8hours and 40 minutes, Arjun Pasricha (who had flown down from Delhi just for this event) emerged as the India Poker Legend Main Event winner taking a massive first prize.

Sunday August 21^st: INR 12k Bounty + Re-entry

The final event of the weekend was a bounty plus re-entry tourney, which saw a below average turnout due to the excitement over the previous days 100k main event. 27 players competed and the tourney organizers announced that this would be a rake free event to ensure maximum value for players. When the final heads up battle between Farukh Shaikh and Pranav Bagai began, it seemed like Pranav (part of the organizing team at The shark) was going to declare the Sunday event at his tourneys a “Mr. Bagai Invitational Challenge”, as he had won the last Sunday tourney he had organized as well. But after many all-ins and the chip lead being exchanged multiple times, Farukh Shaikh emerged as the winner and this also saw him win the “Player of the Series” trophy from the organizers.

Overall, players who attended the weekend complimented the organizers from The Shark on excellent structures set for all four days of the events. The organizers were extremely happy with the response for the 100k main event and said in a statement “We only see numbers for the 100k event at the IPL increasing from here on and hope to have over 50 players competing for the next edition. Response for the smaller events was below par, but this was mainly due to a very short lead time we had from the time we announced our event in July. Moving forward we have some unique events planned in the coming 6-12 months as part of our Premier Indian Poker Tournament Brand.”

With less than 10 days to go for the India Poker Legend tourney to be held from August 18th – 21st at Casino Royale, Goa, we have a brief chat with Mr. Pranav Bagai, the brainchild behind The Shark (organizers of the India Poker Legend) and a pioneer in the poker industry in India.

How did you get involved in the Poker Industry in India?

Basically, I started playing poker in Delhi about 4 years ago around Diwali. I fell in love with the game and dedicated a lot of time to playing Poker in Delhi. I entered the Indian Poker industry as a supplier, because I was sick of playing on dining tables with plastic chips. Considering my family business is printing, moving into the publishing aspect of poker was a natural step and who better to tie up with - other than Card Player. I have been going for tournaments such as IPS and IPC for a while and the experience is amazing. So, we have entered the tournament sphere of the Poker industry as well. The single driving force behind all this? Love for Poker.

You had your last tournament (India Poker Open) at Casino Carnival and now you are working with Casino Royale, any particular reason?

Our last tournament was jointly held with the India Amatuer Poker League (IPRT) and due to mutual difference we have decided to parts ways for the time being. Although, our team spent many months marketing the India Poker Open brand, it’s only a minor setback for now and will only see positive consequences in the long run. We also see the shift in venue as a positive outcome, as Casino Royale has built a name for itself in hosting India’s most prestigious tournaments. Their poker room is the biggest and best in India and is managed very professionally. Their dealers are very well trained, which is of crucial importance. Player feedback suggests they are happy about the move back to Casino Royale because it’s an established poker room and Craig Wildman is a phenomenal Tournament Director. Considering that Casino Royale has its own customer base and is providing us excellent marketing support, we expect to have higher numbers for each of our events at the India Poker Legend tourney in August.

How are the preparations for the India Poker Legend tournament going?

Our team is very excited about the India Poker Legend tourney at Casino Royale. The main event of India Poker Legend is on August 20th, which is the 100k buy in. This event has a guaranteed prize pool of INR 30 lacs, but we are expecting over 40 players to play this event. Considering we got 30 players last time for our event at (Casino) Carnival - getting 40 players at Casino Royale should not be an issue at all. How do you see the emergence of poker tournaments in India moving forward?

Our immediate focus is on poker tournaments in India and in the past year, we have witnessed at least 4-6 new tourney organizers emerge from all over the country. As a starting point, this is natural with people from different cities driving growth within those cities and getting those players to their own tourney brands in Goa. Moving forward, we believe that there will be space for around 4 serious tourney organizers in India. With international brands entering India such as APT, only those Indian players with a reach beyond their local cities will succeed. Additionally, we want to organize poker events beyond just simple tourneys and are in the process of finalizing the same.

The highly anticipated first ever India Poker Open (IPO) took place from the 12^th-15^th May 2011 at the Clubs Card room aboard Casino Carnival, Goa. The response to a new tournament brand at a new poker room, being held on a weekend between two established poker tourney brands was very good. The IPO weekend action included a high stakes INR 100,000 buy-in NLHE freezeout event and the first ever Pot Limit Omaha tournament in India.

A common complaint regarding the poker tournament circuit in India is that players enter the final table averaging 10 - 15 big blinds, which leads to the final table becoming an “all-in” competition. To combat this complaint, the starting stacks and blind structures for IPO events were planned by the organizers in a way that ensured deep stacks and enough room for final table play.

Following action was witnessed at the India Poker Open four day poker tournament:

Thursday May 12^th: INR 5K No Limit Hold’em Re-buy

The first event of the India Poker Open weekend was the 5K re-buy held on Thursday. The event saw a decent response with a field of 51 players starting including tournament regulars such as Dhaval Mudgal, Sangeeth Samoh, Rahul Melwani, Lawrence Sanjay, Rakesh Agarwal, Pranav Bagai, amongst others. Rakesh Agarwal made it back to back victories after winning the IPO 10K freeze-out and guaranteeing the organizers that he would never again miss an India Poker Open event.

Saturday May 14th: INR 100K No Limit Hold’em Freezeout

The awaited main event of the India Poker Open was held on the third day featuring a high stakes 100k free-out tournament. The event finally got underway with a field of 29 players and with a late registration at the end of the late registration period, the total field ended at 30 players. Total prize-pool was one of the largest in Indian poker tournament history with INR 27,00,000 and the event organizers, as promised kept the payouts top heavy with an INR 12,00,000 prize for the eventual winner. Rakesh Agarwal tried to top off his excellent weekend with another in the money finish, but was knocked out in 6^th place. Nonetheless, this saw him win the “Player of the Series” trophy from the organizers. The final table saw an intense heads-up battle between PokerGuru Pro Mihail Stoykov and Card Player India Chief Editor Dhaval Mudgal. After the chip lead being exchanged on multiple occasions, Mihail won the title and retained his reputation for being one of the best high stake tourney players in India.

Turnout was below average and there seemed to be limited interest in PLO tournaments in India at present.
